In groups of four, students were tasked with choosing a person or group to research that they considered a "freedom fighter" in America. Various topics were explored such as: the founding fathers of America, groups involved in the civil rights movement, and Cesar Chavez. Designing a parade float to show how these people fought for freedom proved to be quite a challenge but groups pulled it off in the end to create an amazing parade.
Build & test
Students had many opportunities to practice problem solving skills as they built and tested their hovercrafts. Many learned how to use power tools for the first time along with the physics of making something "hover." Working in a group also created its own set of challenges. Students learned as much about collaboration and critical thinking as they did about history and physics!
Exhibit
Students from High Tech Middle and Explorer Elementary were invited to view our Freedom Fighters Parade. The crowd lined the walkway as an announcer explained the background on each float.
